Belt-Drive Opener Repair
There is a new squeal from the front of the rail, up near the header, on every cycle. The belt has started tracking to one side and its edge is fuzzy where it has been rubbing.

Pull the release with the door fully closed whenever possible, and keep the opening clear as you do. Once the trolley lets go, the door is held by its springs alone, and a closed door can still shift unexpectedly.
Never raise the force setting to push a door through a frozen seal, a stiff track or a tired spring; force is set as low as reliably closes the door, and the reason the door is hard to move is fixed instead.
In plain words
A belt drive is chosen for its quiet, so one that has started to rattle is saying something specific. Sprocket noise usually means the belt is either too loose or too tight. A squeal from the front of the rail points to the idler pulley bearing. A clack at the same point in every cycle is a run of worn teeth or a rail joint out of line. A hum with no movement is a broken clip, a stripped gear or a belt off its sprocket. Repair means reading those sounds, confirming them by inspection and replacing the one component responsible, so the operator returns to its hush.
How the visit goesHalfway up, every single time, the door hesitates and there is a ratcheting sound from the motor head, then it carries on. A closer look shows a stretch of the belt where the teeth are worn almost flat.

How the visit goes

- 1
Reading the belt from end to end
With the trolley run to one end of the rail and then the other, the whole length of the belt passes under the technician's eye and fingers, on the top run and the return. What they are looking for is specific: cracks across the back of the rubber, a glazed shine that says the belt has been slipping, an edge gone fuzzy from rubbing, a stretch where the teeth are flattened or torn away, cords showing through, and the state of the clip or link where the belt meets the trolley. Each of these points to a different cause as well as a different repair, and where the wear sits along the belt says a lot about which.
- 2
Putting motor and trolley back in step
Any time the belt has been off the sprocket, the operator's sense of where the door is can drift from where the trolley actually sits, so this step is done before the door is reconnected. The technician lifts the belt clear of the sprocket, runs the operator until the sprocket turns to its closed position and stops on its own, then slides the trolley to the closed end of the rail and refits the belt. Motor and trolley now agree. On operators with a mechanical limit assembly, the middle contact is adjusted instead. Without this step, the door stops short at one end no matter how the travel limits are turned.
- 3
A door that is balanced under a belt that is right
Because the door was tested by hand before the belt was touched, you leave with the springs and the drive in agreement. Once a season, with the door closed, unplug the operator, pull the release and lift the door to about a metre: it should stay there. If it drifts down or creeps up, the springs have moved and the belt will soon be working harder than it should, so book a spring adjustment before the belt shows it. A door that hesitates at one point in its travel with the operator disconnected is telling you about a roller or a hinge rather than the belt, and that too is a small visit.

What affects the quote
- 1
Adjustment or replacement
A tension adjustment with the safety tests is the smallest visit. A new belt, with a fresh clip, phasing and relearned limits, is a larger one, and the inspection decides which you need.
- 2
Door work found during the balance test
If the door is heavy in the hands when lifted with the operator released, the springs, cables or rollers behind that are priced as their own job, separate from the belt.
- 3
Gear and sprocket kit
Shavings on the motor head mean the drive gear is stripping. Replacing the gear-and-sprocket set means opening the head unit, which is more time and a more substantial part than belt work alone.

Belt-Drive Opener Repair: questions
The belt is fine in summer but stiff and noisy in winter. Why?
Rubber stiffens in cold, so a belt in a detached garage behaves differently at minus twenty than in July. Tension set on a warm day may run tight in deep cold, and a frozen bottom seal can make the operator reverse before the door has moved. The technician sets tension to the opener maker's specified measurement rather than the season, and puts a cold-rated lubricant on the door hardware.
What should I do in the garage before the technician arrives?
Park the cars outside and leave the floor beneath the rail and the door's path open so a stepladder can be set at either end. Lift bicycles and boxes off hooks near the rail. Keep the remotes and wall control within reach and know where the operator plugs in. If the door is stuck closed with a car inside, mention it when booking.
What are the plastic shavings under the motor head?
They are from the drive gear inside the head unit, which is stripping its teeth. On a belt drive the gear turns the sprocket that moves the belt, so a stripped gear leaves the motor humming and the belt still. The gear-and-sprocket kit is replaced as a set, the shaft's end play is checked, and the belt is refitted and phased.

What the census means at the door
61%
Older homes. About 61% of homes in Hamilton were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.
Where most houses were built a generation or more ago, a good share of garage doors are still the originals: wood or early steel sections on extension springs. Those doors respond well to fresh pulleys, safety cables and a careful balance, and the technician carries the parts for them.
56%
A mix of homes. Single-detached houses make up about 56% of homes in Hamilton (2021 Census).
Where housing is varied, security needs vary too. A detached home wants its garage door closing fully and its interior door respected; a townhouse or condo wants old fobs and remotes cleared and the shared entrance working. We address whichever applies at each door.
