What's happening right now?

Door stuck open

Safely, right now

  1. Don't force it down or keep trying the remote. Leave the door as it is.
  2. Nobody walks, plays or parks under the door until it has been checked.
  3. The red release cord stays untouched while the door is open, because the door can fall.

Door won't close

Safely, right now

  1. Stop pressing the button. Trying again and again strains the opener and the top of the door.
  2. Stay out from under the door. If you can see something in its path, like a bin or packed snow, say so when you call.
  3. Leave the safety sensors near the floor as they are: never tape them or bypass them.

  1. Leave the door and the opener alone: no lifting it by hand, no pressing the button.

  3. Don't pull the emergency release while the door is open. It can drop.

  2. If there was a loud bang or the door seemed heavy, leave the release and the door alone: a spring may have snapped.

The fix, explained · Hamilton

What is the door doing?

EmergencyTorsion Spring ReplacementYou heard a sharp bang from the garage, and now the opener hums for a second and gives up.

The fix

Every spring is built for a number of open-close cycles, and replacement is a natural moment to choose that number deliberately. A standard residential spring is commonly rated around ten thousand cycles; a family that opens the door six times a day uses those up in a few years.

Until then

  1. When a spring breaks, the safe approach for the household is to leave the door where it is, keep people and vehicles clear, and avoid running the opener, which can damage the top section, the trolley or the gear drive.

  2. Pull the manual release only when the door is fully closed unless a technician asks otherwise; a door disconnected while partly open can move on its own if the springs are out of balance.

EmergencyOff-Track Garage Door ResetThere was a loud bang from the garage, then silence.

The fix

A reset is different from a track repair, although one visit can include both. Resetting means returning the rollers, cables and sections to the path the track already defines and correcting the small misalignments that let them leave it.

Until then

  1. Never run the opener on a door that is off its track or hanging crooked; every cycle drives the racked door harder into the rails and can pull the track from the wall or tear a hinge.

  2. Pull the manual release only when the door is fully closed unless a technician asks otherwise; a door disconnected while partly open can move on its own if the springs are out of balance.

EmergencyGarage Door Cable ReplacementThe car bumper kissed the door on the way in.

The fix

Which counterbalance your door has shapes the job. Torsion doors carry a spring on a shaft above the opening, and the cables wind onto grooved drums at each end; the technician winds the spring down with steel bars, swaps the cables, sets the drums and winds it back up.

Until then

EmergencyExtension Spring ReplacementThe opener groans on the way up and the door slams the last foot on the way down, hard enough to rattle the windows.

The fix

Every extension spring should carry a containment cable, and replacement is the moment to make sure yours do. A containment cable runs through the centre of the spring and is anchored at both ends, to the rear hanger and to the bracket at the front of the track.

Until then

  1. When a spring breaks, the safe approach for the household is to leave the door where it is, keep people and vehicles clear, and avoid running the opener, which can damage the top section, the trolley or the gear drive.

Book soonEmergency Release RepairYour garage is detached and has no side door.

The fix

Most households meet the release for the first time in a power outage, usually in winter. The door is shut, the car is inside, and the red handle is the only way to move the door.

Until then

  1. Pull the release with the door fully closed whenever possible, and keep the opening clear as you do.

  2. Lift a door by its handles or the gripping points on the panel face, never at the joint between sections, which closes as the door bends around the track.

The fix

What you get from the visit is more than a working door. You get told, in plain words, what was wrong and why it happened: a gear that had run dry for years, a sensor knocked out of line by a snow shovel, a wall control left in lock mode by a visiting grandchild.

Until then

  1. Pull the release with the door fully closed whenever possible, and keep the opening clear as you do.

  2. Never drive a vehicle at a closed door to get out; the door collapses and the stored tension in the counterbalance is released.

Steady hands, plain explanations

Lift cables are inspected at the bottom bracket, where salt and moisture attack them first, and along their full length for broken strands. We replace cables in pairs so both sides carry the load evenly, set the door level, and check the drums for wear that would fray a new cable. A cable job includes rebalancing the springs.

Freelton

  • A walk-through of the door. You see what we see: the spring that has stretched, the cable that is fraying, the sensor that is knocked off line.

  • Care for what is stored. Bikes, tools, seasonal boxes and vehicles are moved or covered as needed, and put back where they were.

  • Choices that fit your plans. Selling next year, staying for decades or renting out: the right option depends on that, and we ask before advising.

What the census means at the door

61%

Older homes. About 61% of homes in Hamilton were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

Where most houses were built a generation or more ago, a good share of garage doors are still the originals: wood or early steel sections on extension springs. Those doors respond well to fresh pulleys, safety cables and a careful balance, and the technician carries the parts for them.

56%

A mix of homes. Single-detached houses make up about 56% of homes in Hamilton (2021 Census).

Where housing is varied, security needs vary too. A detached home wants its garage door closing fully and its interior door respected; a townhouse or condo wants old fobs and remotes cleared and the shared entrance working. We address whichever applies at each door.

Advice · (289) 204-2154

How can I tell if my springs are wearing out before they break?

Watch for a door that feels heavier by hand when the opener is released, an opener that strains or slows, a door that drops the last stretch rather than settling, or one that drifts down when stopped halfway. Visually, look for stretched gaps between coils, rust streaks or pitting on the steel, and any sag in the shaft. A balance check when you notice these lets you plan a replacement rather than react to one.

Why does the door need to be balanced, and how is that tested?

Balance means the spring is holding almost exactly the door's weight, so the door neither flies up nor slams down and the opener only guides it. It is tested by releasing the opener, lifting the door to about waist height and letting go: a balanced door stays there. The technician fine-tunes in quarter turns of the spring until the door holds at several heights and travels evenly on both sides.

Do I need to be home for the visit?

It helps to have someone present to open the garage, point out anything you noticed and hear how the door should feel afterwards. The technician needs power at the opener outlet, clear space under the shaft for a ladder, and access to both sides of the door. If a vehicle is inside, it stays until the door is working. Being there also lets you approve any extra items, such as bearings or cables, as they come up.

Can extension springs be converted to a torsion system?

In many garages, yes. A conversion adds a shaft, centre and end bearings, drums and torsion springs above the opening and removes the extension springs and pulleys from beside the tracks. It needs enough headroom above the door for the shaft and solid framing for the centre bracket. The technician measures the space and the door before recommending it, and the result is smoother, more even lifting with hardware kept clear of the sides.
