Owner's notes
Safety first, then convenience, then looks. That is the order we think about garage doors, and it is the order these articles follow. Start with the sensor test; it takes a minute.

Repair & Maintenance
How should I prepare for the appointment?
Move the car out if you can and clear a metre or so in front of the door and along both tracks so the technician can reach the hinges and brackets. Find the door and opener manuals and any earlier repair paperwork. Have every remote and the keypad code to hand. If something has changed lately, be ready to say when and what you noticed first. If the door looks wrong, leave it where it is. Garage Door Safety Inspection
Can a tune-up make my noisy door quieter?
Usually, yes, and often dramatically. Most garage door noise comes from dry hinge pins, dry roller bearings and hardware that vibration has loosened, and those three are exactly what a tune-up addresses. Some noise comes from parts that have worn, such as a roller gone out of round or a chain that has stretched, and the technician tells you which sounds were settled by maintenance and which point to a part worth replacing, with a separate quote for that. Our shop's overhead door was hit by a delivery vehicle. Is this the same service?
Yes, with the extra weight and size of a commercial door taken into account. The door is secured, the impact damage to sections, track and brackets is assessed, and the reset is paired with whatever track or hardware replacement the strike requires. Because the opening usually needs to be secured before the premises can close for the night, tell the technician when you call so the right track profile and rollers arrive with them. Off-Track Garage Door Reset
How do I know whether the damage is only cosmetic?
Watch the door move. A cosmetic dent leaves the section flat at the joints, the door travelling without a catch, and the hinges and rollers seated normally. Signs that the damage goes further include a crease that reaches a joint or stile, a hinge screw that has pulled out, a roller sitting crooked in the track, a gap of daylight at a joint, or a shudder as that section reaches the track curve. Any of those calls for a proper assessment. Garage Door Panel Replacement

Springs & Hardware
Can worn rollers make the door come off its track?
Yes, and it is one of the main reasons to replace them before they fail. A wheel worn oval, a bent stem, or a short stem sitting loose in a double hinge lets a section drift until the wheel climbs onto the track lip; from there a bump or a gust can carry it out entirely. A door hanging crooked is a far larger repair than a set of rollers. Fresh, correctly sized rollers seated in a squared track are what keep the door where it belongs. Garage Door Roller Replacement
Can a light bump from the car damage a hinge?
Yes, more often than people expect. The bottom two panels take the contact, and the edge hinge at that joint bends along with the stile behind it, so the panel edges rub and the roller leans. The damage sometimes only shows as a new squeak at the curve. The technician straightens or renews the stile, fits a new hinge and roller, and checks the strut and track on that side. Garage Door Hinge Replacement
What if the car hit the door as well as the track?
Then the assessment covers both. A bumper that creases the track usually dents or bows the bottom section, and can bend the bottom bracket, the roller stem and a hinge. The technician follows the impact through those parts, straightens or replaces the track, and explains separately what the section and its hardware need, whether that is a strut, a bracket, or a replacement panel. The door is only put back to work once the whole path is sound. Garage Door Track Repair or Replacement
What is the cable drum, and when does it need replacing too?
The drum is the grooved wheel on each end of the torsion shaft that the cable winds onto as the door opens. Its grooves guide the cable in a single layer and its shape sets how the door is balanced through its travel. A drum is replaced when the grooves are worn or cracked, the cable slot is damaged, or it has spun on the shaft and scored it. Drums are changed in pairs. Garage Door Cable Replacement

Openers & Access
Why does my garage door open by itself?
A door that opens with nobody pressing anything is usually being told to by a fault in its wiring or a control. A pinched or stapled wire to the wall control can short intermittently and act like a button press; a stuck button on a remote left in a coat pocket does the same; and a neighbour's remote on an old fixed-code opener can occasionally trigger it. The technician isolates each control in turn until the phantom command stops. Garage Door Opener Diagnosis and Repair
My opener is decades old. Can the chain drive still be repaired?
Often, yes. Gear kits, sprockets, chains and trolleys are still made for many older heads, and tension, phase and limits can be set on almost any unit. The limit is parts: some makers no longer support units made before the mid-1990s, and those also lack the photo-eye protection expected today. The technician checks parts availability for your model and lays out repair beside renewal so you can decide with the facts. Chain-Drive Opener Repair
The belt is fine in summer but stiff and noisy in winter. Why?
Rubber stiffens in cold, so a belt in a detached garage behaves differently at minus twenty than in July. Tension set on a warm day may run tight in deep cold, and a frozen bottom seal can make the operator reverse before the door has moved. The technician sets tension to the opener maker's specified measurement rather than the season, and puts a cold-rated lubricant on the door hardware. Belt-Drive Opener Repair
Can the new opener use my old rail?
The rail, trolley and drive are designed as one system with the head unit, so a new operator comes with its own rail matched to its motor and drive type. Reusing an old rail would mix parts that were never meant to run together. The old rail, head and hangers come down and are recycled, and a fresh rail is assembled to suit your door's height. Installation & Upgrades
Can the replacement be coordinated with a renovation?
Yes. Share plans for cladding, trim, lighting, ceiling storage, electrical work and floor changes before measurement. Their sequence may affect finished opening dimensions or track clearance. The door proposal can then state which conditions must be complete, who handles each preparation item and when final measurements are taken for the order. Sectional Garage Door Replacement
What information should I receive at handover?
Keep the door and opener manuals, product identification, care instructions and a description of the installed hardware. The closeout should also note manual balance, full-cycle travel and applicable safety tests. Window, finish and seal details help with future care, while model and component records make later parts selection more accurate than relying on appearance alone. Insulated Steel Garage Door Installation
Can a wind-rated door be ordered in a custom width, or only in fixed standard sizes?
Manufacturers build wind-rated panels and reinforcement kits around a set of common opening widths, and most homes fall inside that range without any special order. An unusual opening, a converted carriage house or a hand-built garage, sometimes needs a custom width, which lengthens lead time and narrows the track and hardware options available. Measuring the opening early in the visit shows which category a particular door falls into. Wind-Rated Garage Door Replacement
Can windows be added without losing privacy?
Yes. A higher window row, textured glazing, tinted options or decorative inserts can introduce daylight while limiting direct views into the garage. The useful choice depends on interior sightlines and what sits near the door. Window dimensions and weight are included in the door specification, and their pattern is aligned with the panels and nearby exterior windows. Carriage-House Garage Door Installation
